SUTTON OLD AND NEW

Sutton town centre has little of building interest since it resigned itself to the onslaught of office blocks and shopping malls.

In the wider borough, there are traces of Henry V111’s Nonsuch Palace - while The Oaks in Carshalton (demolished in the late 1950s) was notable for being the residence of the Twelfth Earl of Derby. These two names live on at Epsom racecourse every June.

Cheam Village enjoys Whitehall, a pre-reformation timber-framed building with a gabled porch. The nearby Lumley Chapel is the chancel of the old parish church and a mini treasure trove of brasses and monuments.

The centre of Carshalton still offers delightful steps back into the 18th century and later.  Weatherboarded cottages lie near the station, while Carshalton House has occasional public openings. Its impressive water tower of 1720 may well have been designed by Vanburgh, best known for Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard.

For one of the more attractive 20th century buildings, Wallington Town Hall dates from 1935.

How to apply an oil finish to your hardwood floor

Flooring trends have moved away from the once popular high gloss finishes towards a softer, low-sheen look. This is achieved by using an oil finish (not to be confused with an oil based polyurethane) which has the advantage of being quick and easy to apply as well as its aesthetic appeal.

Sanding and cleaning

Make sure that your last sanding pass uses a slightly coarser grit than you would use for a poly based finish. The rougher grain will allow the wood oil to really soak in and penetrate the fibres of the wood. However, you must vacuum and use a tack cloth just as you would when applying a poly finish.

You will also need to mop the floor with a proprietary wood floor cleaner that's recommended for your type of flooring - you may need to repeat this step with some exotic hardwoods. Wait until the floor is completely dry before applying the first oil coat. Instead of mopping you could use a wood stain at this stage, though using a coloured oil would make this step unnecessary.

Applying the first oil coat

Using a paint roller, apply the first coat of oil all over the floor. One of the advantages of an oil finish is that you don't have to be too careful about the application - work in sections and apply liberally, allowing the oil to penetrate for 15 minutes before buffing the floor and removing excess oil with a squeegee or rags which will give a more distressed look.

Now polish the floor to an even sheen and allow the oil to cure. This can typically take 6 hours, but leaving it overnight is even better.

Final coat and polish

The next morning, you can apply a second coat of oil. You can either proceed with a roller, or pour some oil into the centre of a buffing pad and use to cover the floor. You can now buff to a higher sheen if desired. Your oiled floor will be ready to be used in another 6 hours.

Oiled floors are not for everyone, as they require more frequent maintenance than poly cured floors. However, with their low shine and authentic appeal, oiled hardwood floors are the savvy choice if you want to let the beauty of the wood shine through.
